Classical Chinese through Drama: Chinese Language Drama Appreciation Activity

Today, a group of outstanding Secondary Five students set off with great anticipation for Tuen Mun Town Hall, where they enjoyed the stage production Classical Chinese through Drama VI, presented by Class 7A Drama Group. Stepping out of the classroom, these young lovers of the Chinese language entered the world of classical Chinese in a new way, engaging in a dialogue with the wise minds of a thousand years ago.

Through the lively form of storytelling theatre, the troupe brought to the stage three of the prescribed set texts for the HKDSE Examination — the riveting debates of 《六國論》 (Liùguó Lùn), the boundless imagination of 《逍遙遊》 (Xiāoyáo Yóu), and the deliberation over values in 《魚我所欲也》 (Yú Wǒ Suǒ Yù Yě). With the seamless support of costumes, props and sound effects, classical Chinese was no longer merely static words on a textbook page; the thinking of the ancient sages, together with the rhythm and power of their prose, came vividly to life before the students’ eyes.

We warmly encourage these outstanding students to continue to deepen their study of the Chinese language and to savour the profound meanings of the classical texts. It is also our hope that more students will have the opportunity to experience the charm and beauty of the Chinese language, and to discover the boundless joy and power that lie within words.

Words are never dull — classical Chinese possesses a timeless elegance all its own.
