S3 Subject Selection Parent Meeting

Faced with a diverse range of subject options, how can parents accompany their children in making the most suitable decisions? Following the student-focused subject selection talk, the school’s Academic Committee specially organized the S.3 Parents’ Talk on Elective Subject Selection. This session provided parents with a detailed overview of the school’s curriculum structure and further education pathways, offering clear guidance for students’ academic planning.

In his welcoming remarks, Principal Mr. WAN shared an inspiring story about two sculpture apprentices to illustrate the wisdom behind life choices and subject selection. The first apprentice chose to follow market trends, carving popular court statues. While this path brought early recognition and steady income, the repetitive nature of the work eventually stifled his passion. He viewed his craft merely as a livelihood, leading to a lack of breakthrough and eventual replacement by new technologies and younger talents. In contrast, the second apprentice followed his heart, focusing on the natural beauty of landscapes and flora. Although this path was difficult to master and offered few rewards initially, his dedication to refining his own style and adapting to artistic changes allowed him to become a unique and irreplaceable artist.

The story highlights that there is no right or wrong choice; the key is not to follow trends blindly but to listen to one’s heart and take responsibility for one’s decisions. By choosing for oneself and persevering, one can withstand future challenges and step onto a stage that truly belongs to them. Principal Mr. WAN also shared his own experience of choosing the Arts stream in his youth, undeterred by mainstream trends or material temptations. He encouraged students to stay true to their interests and urged parents to offer suggestions rather than pressure, respecting their children’s wishes so that they may pursue their dreams with passion—like eagles spreading their wings to explore the path ahead.

Following the opening, Vice-Principal Mr. Tam and Assistant Principal Ms. Cheung explained the arrangements for HKDSE Category A Senior Secondary subjects, Category B Applied Learning subjects, and essential selection guidelines. They provided practical advice for further education planning. Additionally, Ms. Lee Tin-chun, Head of Foreign Languages, introduced Category C Other Language subjects, including the school’s Japanese elective and after-school foreign language programs. Our school offers over 300 subject combinations, with a unique “one student is enough to start a class” policy for electives, fully supporting students in exploring diverse developmental paths.

Subject selection in S3 is a critical milestone in a student’s academic journey, requiring the collaborative efforts of both home and school. Like a pair of chopsticks working together, this partnership provides a solid foundation for students to dream bravely and shine with their own unique light in the future.
