Seeds of Science Bloom on Campus — YLLSS Sets a World Record with a Thousand Hands

The seeds of science have burst into brilliant bloom on our campus. Together with Hangzhou Zhongke Runde, CAS Biotechnology (Hong Kong) Limited and BL Beauty, our school successfully staged this meaningful I&T celebration. More than a thousand teachers and students worked as one — in the hall and in classrooms at the same time — and set a new world record for the largest number of people simultaneously making hands-on science products from Chinese Academy of Sciences biotechnology materials.

This was more than a record-breaking first. It was a living lesson in national science and technology. At the ceremony, speeches were given by Chinese Academy of Sciences expert Professor GUO Yan-chuan; Legislative Council Member The Honourable Dennis LEUNG Tsz-wing, MH; Professor CHEUNG Chak-chung, Chairman of the Hong Kong Alliance for Science and Technology Innovation Education; our Principal Mr WAN Ho-yin; and Honorary Fellow NG Nga-ting, CEO of BL Beauty and Zhongke Yahui Biotechnology. Honorary Fellow NG noted that China now holds independently developed biotechnology, and that Hong Kong can serve as an international platform to take those research outcomes to the world. Mr LEUNG encouraged everyone to tell China’s science-and-technology story from a Hong Kong perspective. Professor CHEUNG also pointed out that, amid the AI wave, hands-on experience and a protected sense of curiosity matter more than reciting textbooks.

As Principal Mr WAN shared at the ceremony: “The mission of education is to let every Lutheranian see the widest world from this small campus. Today’s thousand-person feat is a cross-sector celebration bound by the same Chinese blood.” He stressed that a record certificate is only the starting point. What matters more is that students understand science and technology are no longer distant words on a page, but results they can touch and make with their own hands.

During the programme, Physics Panel Head Mr Oscar HO and student TO Yi-sin first explained the science live to the whole school. TO analysed, at the molecular level, the difference between traditional and nano facial masks, and creatively used AI to design an animation showing how dipoles respond under a high-voltage electric field — vividly recreating how a nano mask is made.

Professor SHAO Ming-fei of Zhongke Runde Biotechnology then spoke on “Collagen for Biomedical Applications,” explaining in clear terms the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ core technologies of electrospinning and gelatin. He also answered in detail S.6 student TO Yi-sai’s question on “the greatest challenge in turning laboratory research into everyday products,” helping her see the dedication behind the nation’s outstanding research.

With guests looking on, and with Chemistry majors from Class 5A supporting every class, all students received their own research kits. They mixed the materials into an essence spray and applied it to electrospun collagen film, watching it dissolve in an instant. Practice made abstract micro-science solid and real.

As Professor SHAO said: “Today you use research outcomes with your own hands. In future, I hope you will create research outcomes with your own hands.” May this sense of achievement become a lamp on the I&T path, so the world can see the youth power of China’s independent innovation.

Let us cheer once more for this thousand-person feat.
