To meet the assessment requirements for HKDSE geography and to enhance the fieldwork skills and interests of students, Vice Principal TANG Chi-Lai and Miss NG Tsoi-shan, the head of the Geography Department, led the S5 Lutheranian Geographers in a study of urban environments and the heat island effect.
Students tested hypotheses related to urban greening, distance from the city center, building height, and levels of human activity. They experienced sampling methods such as quota sampling, systematic sampling, and random sampling, and used various instruments to measure carbon dioxide, PM2.5, and wind speed. They conducted an environmental quality survey to understand the urban design and greening situation in the Tai Po city center.
The study area included Tai Po Old Market and Tai Wo Estate to Mei Shu Hang Park, where they observed the development along the Lam Tsuen River and the phenomenon of seawater intrusion, as well as visited the largest Ficus tree in Hong Kong.
We would like to express our thanks to the professional guidance of external instructor Mr. CHAN Yiu-Sang for making this geography lesson so engaging.
