On 5th November, 2025, our S5 Geography students seized the opportunity after Picnic Day to conduct a field study in Sham Shui Po and Shek Kip Mei!
Using the Shek Kip Mei Estate, a site that has undergone 50 years of city-wide redevelopment, as our starting point, we learned to use geographical survey instruments and mastered sampling methods and data collection techniques. We gathered social, economic, and environmental data to test our urban study hypotheses, gaining an in-depth understanding of the housing and urban issues prevalent in these two districts.
Furthermore, we studied the 4R Urban Renewal Strategy (Redevelopment, Rehabilitation, Revitalization, Reservation/Preservation). We examined the heritage conservation, building rehabilitation, and revitalization of key sites such as Mei Ho House and Aquila Ascent, and compared the differences and similarities between the redevelopment of public and private housings. This allowed students to reflect on the future direction of urban development and better understand the significance of urban revitalization and city planning.
By applying textbook knowledge to real-world situations, teachers and students explored and discussed together, perfectly embodying the school’s spirit of “Happydemic.”
The collected data will be further analyzed to enhance the effectiveness of our learning. This experience not only strengthened the geography students’ abilities in field investigation and resource gathering but also inspired a greater sense of responsibility for environmental protection and sustainable urban development.
