Moral and Civic Education: Intangible Cultural Heritage Workshops

Cultural inheritance must be touched and experienced firsthand by students to truly resonate within their hearts. Through two Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) workshops—Dough Figurine Making and Hong Kong-style Milk Tea Crafting—students did more than just learn techniques; they cultivated moral character and civic awareness through a process of immersive, hands-on experience.

In the Dough Figurine Making Workshop, students focused on kneading, pinching, shaping, and carving, transforming ordinary dough into lifelike figures. Through repeated attempts and meticulous creation, they embodied patience, concentration, and perseverance. They felt the warmth of traditional craftsmanship and the “artisan spirit,” learning to respect tradition and cherish culture through their own tactile experience.

The Hong Kong-style Milk Tea Crafting Workshop allowed students to personally complete the entire process of blending, brewing, and “pulling” the tea (colliding tea with milk), experiencing this unique aspect of Hong Kong’s intangible cultural heritage. Every shake, every pour, and every measured force demanded complete focus and meticulous precision. As they brewed their own cups of milk tea, they gained a deeper understanding of the urban memories behind this beverage and the Hong Kong people’s pursuit of excellence.

Through these two experiential activities steeped in local culture, students truly stepped into the world of intangible cultural heritage, building a sense of cultural identity and belonging. These sessions nurtured their moral and civic literacy through active participation. “Inheritance” is no longer just words in a textbook; it has become a vision of precious cultural assets that they have personally experienced and will continue to safeguard.
