School cat Shunshun visits RTHK! At the invitation of the RTHK Radio 5 program “Study Hard”, our Principal Mr. WAN Ho-yin, Assistant Principal Ms. WAI Mo-kam, and the Chairperson of the Animal Caring Club, CHAN Bernice, shared with listeners the heartwarming story of how teachers and students tenderly cared for a once-abandoned, timid, and frail stray kitten from Tin Yiu Estate.
To foster a warm companionship between Shunshun and the school community, the school specially established “Cat Friday”, a dedicated time every Friday when Shunshun returns to campus to meet with teachers and students. As Shunshun requires special care, the school thoroughly cleans the interaction area before each visit and requires everyone to remove their shoes to prevent bacterial infection. Through their meticulous care for Shunshun and close interaction with the small animal, teachers and students have learned to care for animals with their hearts and gradually cultivate empathy.
Since its establishment in the 2018/19 school year, our school’s Animal Caring Club has always upheld the mission of “Respecting Life, Spreading Love”, and currently has about 80 members. The society carries out various activities such as visiting animal organizations, flag-selling for fundraising, and volunteer experiences, turning the belief in protecting animals into practical actions. Further inspired by Shunshun’s experience, the society collaborated with the City University of Hong Kong to develop a smart cat litter box cleaning alert device, applying scientific knowledge to animal conservation and making care both warm and intelligent.
Shunshun’s arrival has deeply planted the seeds of love, trust, and responsibility in the hearts of every teacher and student, allowing life education to take root and sprout on campus.
