The 62nd Sports Day

The 62nd Sports Day of YLLSS drew to a successful close amid applause and sweat. Although the weather was changeable and some events had to be cancelled in the afternoon because of rain, the students’ enthusiasm was undiminished. Athletes from the four Houses raced hard on the track and gave their all on the field.

Principal Mr WAN opened the meet with a ringing “On your marks, set, go!”, instantly lighting up the atmosphere.

This year’s Sports Day was far from smooth. The venue was damaged before the event, and on the day itself the school faced thunderstorms and heavy rain. Fortunately, with the swift response and careful arrangements of the Sports Day Organising Committee, teachers, staff, janitors, guests and students worked together in mutual trust, so that more than nine hundred members of the school community could evacuate in an orderly way within a short time. In wind and rain, everyone stayed calm and watchful; facing sudden change, the team walked together with one heart, showing the precious tacit understanding and resilience of Lutheranians.

Although the weather was unkind and some events could not be completed, the prize-giving and closing ceremonies still went ahead smoothly amid warm applause. Congratulations to all award-winning Houses and outstanding students:

Girls’ Overall Champion: Loyalty House

Boys’ Overall Champion: Loyalty House

Best Discipline Award: Diligence House

Overall Championship: Loyalty House

At the closing ceremony, Principal Mr WAN encouraged everyone: “Every bit of effort is precious; from the moment you stepped onto the field with determination, each of you was already a winner!” These words made a fitting footnote to this year’s Sports Day. Winning is certainly uplifting, but what is more worth cherishing is the courage of students to meet the challenge and persist to the end; the friendship of House members cheering and supporting one another from the sidelines; and the strength of the whole school community looking after one another in the storm and completing this grand occasion together.

We also sincerely thank distinguished alumnus Mr LEE King-lun, Alan for his presence and support. Mr LEE is currently Commander of a police launch in Marine Police West Division, a former Hong Kong basketball representative, and the current team manager of the Hong Kong Police Basketball Team. He encouraged everyone: “Winning or losing comes second; what matters most is to enjoy the competition, to break through oneself, and to hold fast to positive values and a grateful heart while chasing one’s dreams to the full!” His sincere sharing offered students valuable encouragement.

A Sports Day records not only results, but also the figures of those who worked hard, the steps taken side by side, and the memories of a shared experience. Thanks to the teachers of the Sports Day Organising Committee, officiating teachers, janitors, athletes, helpers and students of all Houses for their contributions. May we carry this passion and perseverance forward, continue to walk side by side on different tracks in the years ahead, and run our own brilliant races.
