HK01 – Principal’s Note: Six Years of Cross-Border Ambition, One Tsinghua Dream

At The ELCHK Yuen Long Lutheran Secondary School (YLLSS), every student is a dreamer. We continue to witness the transformative power of education as it guides cross-border students on their six-year journey in search of enlightenment.

What kind of dreams lie hidden in the eyes of cross-border students who travel daily between Hong Kong and the Mainland? TAN Tsz-kit Jack, a S6 student this year, found his answer here over six years ago: before the public examination results were announced, he already held an admission letter from Tsinghua University! With the spirit that “the ambition of youth should touch the clouds”, he writes the prologue to his dream of serving the nation through technology!

During online classes necessitated by the pandemic, Principal Mr. WAN taught history to the Form Two cross-border students, and Tsz-kit took to heart the lesson: “Only by understanding the past can you foresee the future”. Those lessons, which transformed historical materials into stories, became the starting point for his blending of humanities and technology. After moving into science subjects, he grasped the intertwined nature of historical context and scientific development, establishing a pure-hearted aspiration to “serve the nation through medical care and aerospace.”

Tsz-kit’s path of scientific research was built step-by-step, like collecting vitamins:

  • The spark of creativity visible in the STEAM excellent works displayed in the corridors.
  • His team’s design of an “Automated Hospital Ward Round Solution” using facial recognition, which won third place in a Hong Kong UST innovation competition.
  • His involvement in the satellite programming team and a visit to BYD to witness the “Blade Battery.”

These experiences were crucial. The personalized career advice from his mentors further acted as a booster for his dreams.

Through the school’s “Scholars in Residence Program,” Professor LO Wing-cheong (Jon)’s lecture on probability at City University was like a key, unlocking a new academic universe for Tsz-kit. It made him understand that mathematical formulas and physics theories are the gears that will drive the future of aerospace engineering.

The seed of Tsinghua, planted in his heart since childhood, has finally sprouted. He was successfully admitted for his expertise in “Cross-Disciplinary Engineering” (integrating mechanical, AI, and biomedical fields). He stated, “I hope that, from the perspective of a Hong Kong youth, I can offer diverse ideas for cross-innovation in the nation’s medical and aerospace fields.” In the future, he aims to dedicate himself to intelligent rehabilitation robots and telemedicine, ensuring technology brings warmth to people’s lives!

The meaning of education is fundamentally about safeguarding every dream seed. The story of our cross-border student Tsz-kit tells us: as long as one harbors grand ambition, seizes opportunities, and perseveres, the path to dreams will undoubtedly burst forth with brilliant light!
