The recent excursion of teachers and 57 members of our school Orchestra to Guangzhou was a remarkable blend of music, culture, and friendship. Accompanied by gentle spring rain and warm breezes, the group embarked on their journey, eager to foster connections through music.
Upon arrival, they savored authentic Cantonese cuisine before visiting their sister school, Guangzhou Third High School, where they received a warm welcome from Secretary Mr. CHEN and the school’s staff. The introduction to the sister school’s rich history and orchestral development left a lasting impression on our Lutheranians, enhancing their appreciation for the cultural roots of Guangdong.
The afternoon featured a joint sports class, which included a friendly basketball game that celebrated sportsmanship and camaraderie between the students. Following the rain, sunshine greeted the group as they toured the sister school’s campus, led by student ambassadors, deepening mutual understanding between the two institutions.
In the evening, our students experienced the historical architecture of the Shamian Scenic Area, reflecting on the remnants of the Second Opium War, before concluding their day in the bustling atmosphere of Yongqing Fang, where they absorbed local culture.
The highlight of the trip was the long-awaited orchestral exchange concert. After extensive preparations, our school sinfonietta took to the stage, commencing with speeches that inspired emotional connections through music. Conducted by Mr. YEUNG Hon-kwan, the orchestras performed a range of pieces from classical to modern, culminating in a collaborative performance that brought joy to all attendees.
On the final day, our Lutheranians engaged in classroom activities with their Guangzhou peers, promoting mutual learning. They also enjoyed a cultural showcase featuring traditional performances, including Cantonese opera and martial arts, providing insight into the region’s rich artistic heritage.
The journey concluded with visits to significant landmarks, showcasing the blend of ancient and modern Guangzhou, such as the Guangzhou Tower and the bustling Beijing Road, all while reflecting on the cultural exchanges experienced over the trip.
