Visual Arts

Subject Features: Visual Arts Department

The Visual Arts Department is dedicated to nurturing students’ creativity and driving innovation in artistic practice. Our teaching philosophy is defined by a dynamic, forward-thinking approach—one that weaves technology integration, cross-community engagement, cultural exploration, and expert collaboration into every stage of the art-making journey.

  1. Embracing Cutting-Edge Technology

We leverage state-of-the-art technologies to redefine artistic expression and push the boundaries of traditional art forms. By integrating tools such as Virtual Reality (VR)Augmented Reality (AR), and Artificial Intelligence (AI), we enable students to explore uncharted creative dimensions: they design immersive installations, develop interactive artworks, and experiment with digital mediums that bridge the gap between physical and virtual art—turning abstract ideas into tangible, engaging experiences.

  1. Engagement Beyond the Classroom

We believe artistic growth thrives on real-world connection. To this end, we actively encourage students to participate in external exhibitions, industry workshops, and artist-led masterclasses. These off-campus experiences let students engage directly with professional artists, curators, and art programs, providing them with firsthand insights into the art world. Such interactions enrich their creative practice, challenge their perspectives, and help them build a network of peers and mentors early in their artistic journey.

  1. Global Arts and Cultural Exploration

Cultural understanding is foundational to meaningful artistic creation. We offer students opportunities to immerse themselves in global art practices through curated trips to art museums, festivals, and cultural events across countries including France, England, Switzerland, Scotland, China, Korea and Japan. These journeys expose students to diverse artistic traditions—from classical European masterpieces to contemporary Asian installations—fostering a deeper appreciation for the world’s artistic heritage and inspiring them to infuse cross-cultural perspectives into their own work.

  1. Collaboration with Renowned Scholars & Artists

We partner with leading figures in the art and academic communities to bring expert knowledge directly to our students. Key collaborators include Professor Mee-ping Leung, the former Director of the Centre for Research & Development in Visual Arts at the Academy of Visual Arts in HKBU, and the renowned artist and designer Kingsley Siu-king Ng, Associate Professor and Programme Director in the Arts and Technology Department at HKBU. This collaboration provides students with access to expert knowledge and artistic insights that help enhance their creativity.

  1. Building the Elite Visual Artists (EVA) Community

We are committed to nurturing emerging talent through our Elite Visual Artists (EVA) program—a tailored initiative for students with exceptional artistic potential. The program offers specialized training, personalized project guidance, and targeted support to prepare students for national and international arts competitions. Beyond skill-building, EVA fosters a collaborative community where young artists share ideas, inspire one another, and grow their unique artistic voices—laying the groundwork for future success in the arts.

  1. Showcasing Student Artistry

To celebrate and amplify student achievements, we provide dedicated on-campus platforms for showcasing their work:

  • Art Hub: A dynamic exhibition space for featured student projects, from paintings and sculptures to digital installations.
  • Art Lane: A curated corridor displaying rotating selections of student art, creating an accessible, daily reminder of our community’s creativity.

These spaces not only highlight students’ talent but also encourage dialogue—inviting peers, teachers, and visitors to engage with their work, ask questions, and celebrate the role of art in our school community.
